Let the countdown begin...

With closing set to finally occur tomorrow at 5:00 PM, my type A personality is in full swing and to-do lists are swimming about in my head.  We have only about 6 more months until we are planning on moving to the land to begin the building process and there are countless things that must be done prior to our move... so in an attempt to clear out the mess of thoughts swirling about, here goes:
(Note: Items in blue are to be completed by the end of November 2013, items in purple to be completed by March 2014, and items in green to be completed by May 2014)
  • Purchase a 40 ft. shipping container and have it delivered to the land
    • Bring all of the items that have already been donated to the land and place in shipping container
  • Re-roof the garage at our current home to prepare it to be rented
  • Finish designing our Earthship (Draft 1) in Google SketchUp
  • Send our first draft design to our consultants to review (more on our consultants, Jay and Annie from Blue Rock Station in future posts... they are lovely!)
  • Revise Earthship design as needed
  • Have our Earthship design reviewed by an architect and/or engineer if needed
  • List our rental property for sale... (FYI: it is a charming 2 bedroom, 1 bath home near the Oregon District, University of Dayton, etc. that will be aggressively priced for the Dayton, OH area... message me if you're interested!)
  • Submit formal permitting application to build to the county and city
  • Obtain permit from EPA to store an excess of 100 tires on our land
  • Prepare tiny cabin on land to live in
    • Screen in front porch to make it safer for Elliot and to increase our liveable space
    • Build stairs for loft (sleeping space)
    • Install flooring for loft
    • Install electrical
    • Figure out water situation... rain harvesting from metal roof on porch with supplemental drinking and cooking water brought in?
    • Find mini-appliances for cabin if needed and/or figure out cooking space in cabin
  • Pack up our current home
  • Rent out our current home
  • Continue collecting items for build from friends, family, strangers
  • Move to the land
  • Prep the land to build
  • Build the Earthship (to-do list for this doozie to come though my mind may combust prior to this list finding its' way to our blog)
Now, this list is by no means exhaustive, but it does cover the big to-dos to come.  I cannot tell you how invigorating it is to be pursuing this change of lifestyle but we are by no means making light of all the work to come.  We are trying to really enjoy every step of the way and have currently been having the most fun designing the layout of our home-to-be.  We'll be sure to post the first draft for comments and feedback once it is completed!
